BATIK is an all-female dance company founded in 2002, by choreographer, Ikuyo Kuroda. After winning the “National Committee Award” at Yokohama Platform of “Rencontre Choreographic Internationales de Seine Saint Denis” in 2002, they officially started as a professional dance company. Besides performing in Japan, the company has given overseas performances in various occasions so far including the Dance Umbrella Festival in U.K. (04), Venice Biennale (07), and Expo Zaragoza, Spain (08). Their main works are SIDE B (02), SHOKU (04), Flowers flow, time congeals (04, recreation 09) and pendanteve (07).

Ikuyo Kuroda

Ikuyo Kuroda started taking classical ballet lessons when she was six years old. While being a member of Tani Momoko Ballet Company, she went to London in 1997 to study contemporary dance at the Laban Centre. In 2000, she became a leading member of “Kim Itoh + the Glorious Future.” In 2002, she founded her own company “BATIK”. In 2003, she won the “Next Generation Choreographer Award” as well as the “Audience Award” at Toyota Choreography Award. In 2004, she presented her new works Flowers flow and time congeals and SHOKU. Of late, she has expanded the area of activities─presenting solo works, choreographing for Noism05 led by Jo Kanamori, and participating as a dancer in ASOBU choreographed and directed by Josef Nadj. She choreographed a new piece for the Helsinki Dance Company in Finland, 2008. Her latest works include chain and allow in Dance Triennale Tokyo 09, and Flowers flow, time congeals (recreated version) in FESTIVAL / TOKYO 09.
